A simple introduction to nominal conductor size and the questions to ask before buying electrical wire.
For many electrical wires, a size stated in square millimetres (mm²) refers to the nominal cross-sectional area of the conductor. It is not the same as the outside diameter of the insulated wire.
Conductor size is one factor in electrical safety. Appropriate selection also depends on conductor material, insulation, installation method, circuit length, surrounding temperature, protective devices and applicable standards.
Always check the actual product marking and seek advice from a qualified electrician for a specific installation.
